Thomas Family Enrichment Center brings families, children, and the community together as partners to support reading and literacy development. Children engage in independent, one-on-one, as well as interactive group-read-aloud and a variety of activities that help reinforce reading comprehension and fluency. Families learn ways to strengthen their child’s love of reading with high interest books and engagement.
Children will engage in independent and small group instruction that incorporates phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension using the RIF Model.
Project Design
The Reading Is Fundamental Model (RIF) is based upon the Science of Reading (SOR). By providing high quality instruction using word decoding and language comprehension, children develop reading comprehension. Three RIF programs have been reviewed for adoption. The programs support children who are struggling with vowel sounds, consonant blends, decoding, and vocabulary.
Skybrary is an interactive digital platform that provides close to 1000 high interest ebooks. Children will receive daily enrichment by accessing Skybrary as part of their summer reading. The platform will be accessible in our interactive Technology Room. Children will have both web and iPad access to Skybrary. Up to 200 video field trips and activities will be included in learning. The program includes a read-to-me feature and encourages independent reading.
Read for Success is a supplemental program to help any child who may need additional support. Program research shows that children who performed below proficiency in reading showed the greatest increase in test scores. Read for Success is deeply rooted in group read-aloud and independent reading.
Children pick their own books to read at the center as well as at home. The program offers instructional support and resources to engage and assess progression. A strong family engagement component extends summer reading and learning opportunities with take home activities.
Books for Ownership is a community literacy event for our Back-to-School Fair in August.
Timeline
From date of award through May 31, 2026, a minimum of 10 PD hours and training will be completed by staff. Program materials will be ordered and inventoried for the summer program. Our Enrich and Read program will operate for a total of 10 weeks. The children will begin on June 1, 2026, and continue until August 7, 2026.
Children will access the Skybrary Program weekdays for 45-minutes of high interest activities and lessons. The Read for Success Program will engage children for 45 minutes as well weekdays. Children will be formatively assessed weekly using the Literacy Tracker. A total of 30 minutes each week will be dedicated to children utilizing this online assessment tool to track, monitor progress, and help with planning more personalized instruction. The Skybrary Program aligns with Common Core and Missouri state standards to support instruction for multiple disciplines.
The first week children attend the Enrich and Read Program, baseline data will be collected to help create the benchmarks to be met for each child. During weeks 2-10, children will engage in a total of 225 minutes of reading with the Skybrary Program and 225 minutes reading with Read for Success. Each child will receive 8 hours of weekly reading support (including 30 minutes per week of Literacy Tracker) for a total of 2000 hours of reading support and instruction for the summer.
Assessment Methods
Literacy Tracker is the formative adaptive assessment tool for The Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program and will be used for the Enrich and Read Summer Program. The Literacy Tracker assesses and monitors children’s reading progress by tracking the date of reading, time spent reading, reading level, total word, word selection, and adaptive quizzes.
The Literacy Tracker can recommend books that match the interests and reading level of our children. The Literacy Tracker will help our children develop an awareness of how they are performing so that they may learn how to take ownership of their learning.
Children will be able to correct multiple choice responses giving them instant feedback and allowing them to apply reading strategies learned.
Reading performance reports are generated to help guide instruction and selection of books to encourage independent reading for the summer. The Literacy Tracker helps in the design of personalized reading to increase awareness and understanding of new material.
The Literacy Tracker will adapt to accommodate reading performance. Reading passages and topics are child centered. New passages are selected based upon the number of correct questions from a previous passage. It is adjusted to a higher or lower Lexile level based upon past performance.
Children will be assessed 30 minutes per week for weeks 2-10. Assessments include time spent reading, grade level and Lexile reading level, word count, and literal and inferential reading comprehension.
