Urban Harvest STL builds community around inclusive and resilient local food systems. Comprised of two preschool gardens, a rooftop garden, a community garden, and a new demonstration farm, UHSTL’s 5 farms grow produce in a variety of ways that are accessible and replicable to a range of urban communities. In 2025, UHSTL grew 6,441 pounds of fresh produce and distributed at least 83% to the local community.
UHSTL is committed to education as well as food distribution. UHSTL has partnered with two North St. Louis early learning centers to facilitate the Little Sprouts Garden Education Program. Their farmers maintain the two gardens while the educators lead over 200 preschoolers in 33 weeks of hands on programming, including hands on cooking demonstrations featuring produce the children grew. This program introduces fresh vegetables to children in low income areas with low access to grocery stores, building healthy habits at a young age.
This Give STL Day, we are excited to announce that we have BIG plans for our Little Sprouts! UHSTL farmers are working together across sites to coordinate regular food distribution to Little Sprouts families. Fresh Starts Community Garden will help to provide over 800 pounds of organic produce for distribution at Little Sprouts sites from May-October, for a total of 1,200 pounds grown across the three sites over 6 months. UHSTL will supplement 10% of 10 families recommended vegetable intake monthly, saving them up to $50 per month at the grocery store. Leftover produce will be distributed market style to the broader school community.
With your gift on Give STL Day, you will help to provide 10 families from our partner schools with biweekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes. These boxes will feature vegetables that the children are familiar with, reinforcing the lessons while supporting food security at home.
Together we can Grow Food. Grow Community. Grow Growers.
