SHED (Sustainable Housing and Equitable Development) is a resident-driven, community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing housing equity for low-to-moderate-income residents in University City. Founded in 2009 by Don Stucke, SHED began by offering minor exterior home repairs for the seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities he encountered while delivering Meals on Wheels. Since then, SHED volunteers have repaired more than 600 homes in University City’s Ward 3.

Today, SHED’s mission has grown. While still providing home maintenance and repairs to University City residents, SHED also partners with local nonprofits, businesses, banks, credit unions, faith-based organizations, academic institutions, and city government to build affordable housing, offer education on homebuying and ownership, and create career pathways in the skilled trades for local high school students.

Mission

Building stable foundations for accessible and inclusive communities. Since 2023 SHED has worked to create a more stable and revitalized 3rd Ward in University City by:

• Providing seniors, veterans, and the disabled with home repairs.

• Purchasing vacant lots and building affordable housing for low-to-moderate income families.

• Providing housing education webinars and an annual housing fair for first-time home buyers and current homeowners.

• Providing opportunities for students interested in construction technology to gain hands-on experience working alongside licensed tradespersons on projects that benefit residents.

• Facilitating the development of neighborhood leadership within University City’s 3rd Ward to engender community engagement and provide a way for residents to voice their concerns about, and their vision for, their neighborhoods.
