Everyone deserves a safe and healthy home. But many older adult homeowners in St. Louis live in houses with doors that don’t lock, leaking roofs, broken stairs and missing handrails. With aging housing stock and an aging population, the need for quality home repairs in our community is greater than ever.
For more than 30 years, Rebuilding Together St. Louis has focused on helping our neighbors age in place in their own homes by providing home modifications and repairs at no cost to the homeowners. We work with older adults and US Military veterans who invested in homeownership 20, 30, or even 50 years ago. Age, physical disabilities, and fixed incomes limit their ability to keep up with household maintenance and repairs and with the rising costs of materials, the challenge of maintaining a home is greater than ever.
To help as many people as possible with the most impactful repairs, Rebuilding Together St. Louis has built an extensive network of corporate partners who provide volunteer teams to assist with minor repairs. Skilled trade unions offer significant assistance to tackle projects that require professional expertise. And we receive grants to fund major repairs such as roof replacements and tuckpointing.
Our commitment to safe and healthy housing extends to supporting the survivors of the May 16, 2025 tornadoes. The tornado path ran directly through the neighborhoods where many of our clients live, and we are committed to continue our partnership so that they can return to their homes and community.
Home repairs make an immediate difference to the homeowner and also support family stability through homeownership. Here’s just some of the feedback we have received from repair recipients in the last year:
"Rebuilding Together's contribution is beyond just my house. It's peace of mind for my entire family. My children are as grateful as I am, too!"
"I love my fans and light switches. My kitchen light is accessible. I don't need to use a knife to reach the light switch between the wall and refrigerator."
“My backyard-all the bushes gone and the fence is clean. I don’t have to worry about someone hiding in my bushes. I feel so much safer and that’s the best thing you all did. I feel so much safer getting into my house because of that.”
"All the repairs were great-but the electricity is the most important repair you guys did. Everything is safe. Everything is up to code and I don’t have to worry about that. It’s all grounded. That’s the most important thing for me. It’s made me feel safer."
"I’m very confident now because of the bannisters. The one going down to the patio out back is really helpful.”
