Organization Overview
One Silverstar is a community-driven nonprofit (501(c)(3) status) led by Founder/ President Cassandra Logan. Based on a "hands-up, not a handout" philosophy, the organization serves as a catalyst for neighborhood transformation in St. Louis. Beyond immediate food relief, One Silverstar integrates housing, education, and employment and empower residents.
2. Vision & Mission
Vision: To create a community united by hope and prosperity, where no individual is left behind and every family has the scaffolding to thrive.
Mission: To build a prosperous community through sustainable, affordable housing, education, health, arts, and employment, addressing the root causes of poverty and crime.
3. The Need & Challenges Addressed
The St. Louis community faces systemic hurdles that One Silverstar is uniquely positioned to address:
Food Insecurity: Limited access to fresh, nutritious food in urban "food deserts."
Transitional Phase: The organization is currently working to secure a permanent warehouse space to expand operations and establish a recycling/sustainability hub.
Economic Barriers: High unemployment and a lack of childcare often prevent parents from pursuing stable careers.
Environmental Pollution: A lack of localized recycling and waste management infrastructure.
4. Program Description: The "Community Hub"
The core project is the development of a multi-service Community Hub featuring:
Food Share Distribution: Regular distribution events to combat immediate hunger.
Community Cooking Classes: Teaching healthy eating and culinary skills that can lead to employment.
Let’s Play to Grow: A youth program focused on problem-solving, critical thinking, and violence prevention through social interaction.
Commercial Kitchen: A space for local food entrepreneurs to launch small businesses.
This fosters self-reliance and long-term independence. By contributing our efforts, we can create a ripple effect of positive change by addressing the root causes of crime in our communities, such as limited access to affordable housing, education, a lack of hope, food, employment opportunities, and mental health services. We strive to make this a shared goal."
