At Global Learning Exchange Initiative (GLXi®), a nonprofit organization with official status in both St. Louis, Missouri, and Guatemala, we’re on a mission to change lives by transforming literacy. Nationally accredited by Guatemala’s Ministry of Education, we provide an innovative curriculum that teaches children from preschool through third grade how to read, write, and think critically—skills that shape their futures.

Why Early Literacy Matters:

The first years of education are the foundation for everything that comes after. Children who master reading and writing by third grade are more likely to stay in school, pursue higher education, and achieve their dreams. But in Guatemala, many children are falling behind. As of 2019, only 39.3% of third graders achieved the minimum reading proficiency level. This gap in literacy leads to higher dropout rates and missed opportunities for a better life.

According to a long-term study by the Anna E. Casey Foundation, "students who were not proficient in reading by the end of third grade were four times more likely to drop out of high school than proficient readers. In fact, 88% of students who failed to earn a high school diploma were struggling readers in third grade. Third grade has been identified as important to reading literacy because it is the final year children are learning to read, after which students are "reading to learn."

Why Guatemala?

Guatemala is a country with immense potential—half of its population is under 19 years old, yet poverty and lack of educational resources are holding back future generations. While education is mandatory through sixth grade, children receive just four hours of school per day, leaving many without the tools to succeed. Your support can help change this.
