ArchCity Defenders

A nonprofit organization

We are a racial justice and holistic legal advocacy organization. For over ten years, our work has challenged prejudicial and punitive policies and practices, advanced equity, fought for revolutionary justice, and supported individuals, families, and communities devastated by racism and neglect. Our agency was founded to combat housing insecurity and homelessness and to advance the rights of communities of color, poor people, tenants, unhoused people, and families.

Victories & Impact:
-We have brought 62 (and counting) civil rights lawsuits against municipalities throughout the region-challenging policies and practices such as cash bail, illegal housing practices, and ending debtors' prisons in cities like Ferguson, Jennings, Normandy, and Maplewood.
-Recovered $11 million+ in damages for thousands impacted by predatory policing and racial profiling.
-Facilitated over $33,000 in emergency assistance to assist households struggling to pay their utility bills, rent, and other debt they incurred.
-Helped 50 people avoid homelessness or moved into permanent housing in 2022.
