There are plenty of outreach groups going to downtown Saint Louis and doing a good job working with the large camps for the homeless and the shelters and providing food to these groups.
We learned that there is a large number of homeless that are living hidden in abandoned buildings and houses, or living in tents, some just laying on the pavement under a highway overpass or in a parking garage. These people are isolated and receive much less contact with outreach groups. As a team we go out and reach these people. We make between 20 and 30 stops on a given day and serve an average of 55 individuals. One of the things we are focused on is helping these unhoused individuals with their needs but not “enabling” them. Over time we provide them with direction, references and options to turn their lives around. We do this while showing the love of Jesus. We listen to their stories, we cry with them and congratulate them on their successes. We look them in the eye and share hugs and prayers if they will allow it. For many we are the only Bible they will ever read.
