Pura Vida Academic Champions (PVAC) was founded by James Robinson III (JR), a bilingual educator and school leader with more than 18 years of experience in education. During a study abroad experience in Costa Rica, JR encountered the phrase “Pura Vida.” More than a greeting, it reflected a way of living rooted in joy, connection, presence, and possibility. That experience deepened his belief that education should do more than inform. It should awaken confidence, curiosity, and purpose.
Throughout his journey as a teacher and administrator, JR saw firsthand how the structure of the traditional school day often leaves little room for the kinds of meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that truly inspire students. Between testing schedules, mandated professional learning, behavioral demands, and the growing weight of students’ social and emotional needs, the space for creativity, curiosity, and exploration continues to shrink. Additionally, we have recognized a deeper inequity within the school structure. Many students have the talent, energy, and potential to thrive, but access to high-quality enrichment opportunities outside of school is too often determined by zip code, resources, and affordability. PVAC was created to help challenge that disparity.
We believe learning should feel alive. It should be engaging, culturally relevant, confidence-building, and connected to the real world. Our mission is to provide affordable, culturally enriching learning experiences and targeted academic support for under-resourced students across the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, helping young people build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and access pathways to lifelong success.
PVAC is beginning its inaugural year by providing a summer enrichment program, CampVibez, for students in grades 3-8. What makes CampVibez truly different is its Whole Scholar Model. Rather than isolating subjects into disconnected parts of the day, PVAC brings together academics, cultural learning, wellness, and enrichment within one integrated daily experience. Scholars engage in literacy, mathematics, Spanish acquisition, nutrition and wellness, soccer and movement, and hands-on enrichment in ways that reinforce one another and keep learning alive. This kind of intentionally connected design is unlike most traditional summer or intervention models currently available, and it reflects PVAC’s belief that students grow best when learning feels relevant, dynamic, and whole.
As PVAC continues to grow, our vision extends beyond just summer enrichment programs. We are building toward a broader model of support that includes academic intervention and enhancement in literacy, mathematics, and Spanish acquisition for students in grades 3–8. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to explore their interests, discover their strengths, and build a future filled with possibility. At PVAC, we do not just fill gaps. We transform energy into opportunity.
