Options for Justice is a very unique organization designed specifically to provide services and supports to individuals who have a developmental disability and who are involved in the criminal justice system.

It is evident by the number of individuals referred to the Program, that many people meet eligibility criteria for available supports and services, but are not aware of or have ever pursued assistance from these supports. OFJ understands the unique challenges that an individual who has a developmental disability may have if they become involved in the criminal justice system. Without support, these individuals often fail meeting expectations, do not understand their obligations and rights, and are not successful at maneuvering through the system. This can result in additional charges, a greater financial burden, or extended time within the criminal justice system. OFJ can demonstrate that every individual who participates in the Program will be more successful if they have someone advocating for them and connecting them to critical supports.

Options for Justice has also seen evidence that all individuals are better served within the system if professionals are trained and educated to identify and understand the unique and specific needs of these individuals.  Research shows that individuals with intellectual, cognitive or developmental disabilities get involved in the criminal justice system as both suspects/offenders and victims more often than individuals without disabilities. These individuals constitute a growing percentage of suspects/offenders within the criminal justice system. While those with an intellectual disability comprise approximately 3% of the general population, they now represent approximately 18% of the prison population. The number of individuals who identify themselves as having a learning disability is even greater. These numbers are difficult to update because of the high number of individuals who actually meet the eligibility criteria for a developmental disability – but have never sought services or supports prior to entering the criminal justice system. Options for Justice provides the critical link to identify these individuals and to connect them to available resources and services to help promote success.

Mission

Options for Justice provides support services and education/training for individuals served, families, and professionals in the justice, social service, and/or developmental and intellectual disabilities service delivery system. Options for Justice helps determine eligibility for our program and ultimately for available resources. We ensure that individuals understand their rights and responsibilities, then work to create an individualized plan of support designed to pave the way for a successful outcome as participants navigate the justice system. We work to make connections to important resources, assist with navigating the intricate facets of accessing these resources, then continue to support the individual as they work toward meeting their goals. With assistance, individuals can break the cycle of detainment, or failure within the system, to become active, contributing members of their community.
