Organizational Background
2026 marks MOKAN’s 50th Anniversary, representing half a century of service to the St. Louis community and a sustained commitment to building pathways to family-sustaining careers in construction.
The MOKAN Construction Contractors Assistance Center (MOKAN CCAC) was founded in 1976 to expand economic opportunity for minority contractors and workers in the construction industry throughout the St. Louis region. Established by a coalition of civic leaders, contractors, and community advocates, MOKAN was created to address the lack of access minority-owned construction businesses and workers faced in public and private construction markets.
For nearly five decades, MOKAN has worked to increase diversity and equity in the construction industry by supporting minority- and women-owned construction firms, advocating for fair participation in major construction projects, and preparing individuals from underserved communities for careers in the skilled trades.
Today, MOKAN provides a range of services including contractor development, workforce training, advocacy for equitable contracting opportunities, and partnerships with public agencies and private sector developers to ensure that minority businesses and workers are included in regional economic growth.
A cornerstone of MOKAN’s work is its 10-week Pre-Apprenticeship Workforce Training Program, which prepares individuals for careers in the construction and skilled trades industries. Participants receive hands-on training and industry-recognized certifications such as OSHA-10 Construction Safety, Forklift Operation, Flagging Certification, First Aid/CPR, Blueprint Reading, and workplace safety training. Graduates are connected directly to contractors, unions, and employers seeking skilled workers.
The training focuses on preparing participants for careers in construction trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, heavy equipment operation, and general construction. Participants receive instruction in safety, workplace expectations, and technical skills while also gaining exposure to real jobsite conditions.
Graduates earn several industry certifications including OSHA-10 Construction Safety, Forklift Operation, Flagging Certification, First Aid/CPR, Blueprint and Specification Reading, Confined Space Awareness, and Workplace Violence Prevention. In addition to technical training, participants receive job readiness support including resume preparation, interview coaching, financial literacy, and professional development.
The program connects graduates with employment opportunities through partnerships with contractors, construction firms, unions, and public agencies throughout the St. Louis region.
