Main Street Books Literacy Foundation

     Main Street Books Literacy Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to improving reading proficiency and book ownership for students in under-resourced elementary schools in St. Charles County. Reading at the third grade level by the end of third grade is a critical indicator of lifelong success. Our goal is to provide free books, interaction with authors, and literary experiences to foster and encourage reading and writing. Statistics show that low literacy lends to struggles in other school subjects and greatly increases the likelihood of one not finishing high school. In addition, there are long term economic challenges such as limited career choices, lower earnings, and a greater risk of unemployment which furthers the poverty cycle. Furthermore, low literacy can be linked to behavioral issues and even future incarceration. 

     However, we also know that book ownership is a primary indicator of students' success. Building one's own library can be as valuable as having 2 parents with a university education or equivalent to an additional three years of schooling. 

    We pair a grade level appropriate book with an experience that gets kids excited, engaged, and creates a lasting memory of receiving that free book. 

    We recognize a great need, as well as an opportunity, to assist in setting our local youth up for success. In partnership with educators, librarians, and those like you in our community we aspire to bridge the gap between creators and readers. We strive to provide as many free books as possible to kids who don't have the resources for book ownership. We're currently on target to donate over 1500 books to St. Charles County Title 1 elementary school students for the 2025-2026 school year!
