House Rabbit Society of Missouri

A nonprofit organization

We are a 100% volunteer organization operating in the St. Louis metro area for over 28 years. We have over 50 animal shelters, organizations, and communities calling upon us for help regarding domestic rabbits. Our rabbits are spayed/neutered, health checked by a veterinarian highly skilled in rabbit health care, medically treated as needed, fully vaccinated for RHDV2 (a deadly rabbit-only virus), socialized, and litter box trained. Adopters attend an orientation class on rabbit care & behavior, and we provide a variety of ongoing support. We have volunteers who go out to catch unfortunate rabbits that were abandoned outdoors.  Over half of the rabbits in our shelter were abandoned to die outside.  Each year, we do numerous community or in-shelter activities and events. Rabbits are not what most people believe, making education about them extremely important. They are not low-cost, low-maintenance, or good starter pets for children "to learn responsibility." Rabbits are very smart and very complex creatures that can live 10 years or longer.  Many items sold for them are harmful or painful. Rabbits are happiest and healthiest when living indoors with their people. Our educational efforts span from pre-school to accredited continuing education events for veterinarians and vet techs. Although primarily active in the St. Louis metro region, our rescues have come from all over Missouri and Illinois, plus other surrounding states. We have also traveled to other rabbit rescues to help with education. In 2013, we opened the first all-rabbit shelter in Missouri, in southwest St. Louis County. It is the only free-standing rabbit shelter in Missouri and one of only a handful in the United States or the world.  Our foster homes care for our sanctuary rabbits (those unable to be adopted), so that they may live a happy life in a home.  Our adoptable bunnies are available to be seen by adopters at our shelter/adoption center after setting up an appointment to visit.

Mission

We save rabbit lives and provide information on their care as loved, indoor family companions. Our rescues come from multiple situations such as shelters prior to euthanasia when their time is up, catching ones that have been cruelly turned loose and have no hope of survival, confiscations where our help is requested, and some surrenders where a serious situation exists. Besides helping the rabbits, we love helping people learn more about them and being part of our community.
