LITERACY IS A BASIC CIVIL RIGHT. WE EMPOWER FAMILIES FACING A LITERACY CRISIS TO SECURE EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS FOR THEIR CHILDREN FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE COURTROOM.
The key to a person’s success is literacy. A child who falls farther and farther behind in their reading ability finds themselves falling behind in all coursework. While reading in kindergarten and first-grade focuses on the skill of reading, as a child moves up in grade-level, the other components to education - science, math, social studies, and more - integrate reading in the classroom. An inability to read limits their ability in these other areas of education. Literacy impacts a child's ability to succeed in math, science, history and more. Beyond the education success, one's workforce success and lifelong thriving is connected to their ability to read.

As noted in 2024, “[St. Louis Public Schools] students have a reading proficiency score of 19% compared to a 45% statewide average, according to the National Center for Education Statistics annual report card.” (See, St. Louis American- Literacy for the Lou Editorial February 1, 2024.)
More than 50% of children in 4th grade and up in our public schools wake up every day unable to read proficiently. Many of them come from families where illiteracy has been a generational problem, and poverty compounds on itself. In 2022, more than 70% of 3rd graders in Missouri were at a below proficient reading level. That same 2022 survey found that more than 80% of 8th graders read at a below proficient level and 40% of 4th graders read at a below basic reading level.
“In the St. Louis Public Schools, about 14% of Black third-graders are proficient readers, compared to 61% of White students.” (See Missouri Independent- Challenges persist for St. Louis schools, as NAACP pushes for improved literacy rates.)
