The Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center (LNAC) views our work as "social change through music" and offers three music education programs. We focus on reaching under-resourced populations, but welcome all who come to learn. For sixteen years, we have offered high level music education over three initiatives. Our KEYS program, led by Washington University students, offers beginning keyboard instruction for young students. Our JUMP program teaches beginning strings, music history, and literacy for beginning and intermediate students, starting as young as 4 years old. Our third program is the Lemp Community Orchestra (LCO). The LCO is open to students with a higher level of playing proficiency and offers college level instruction in music history and theory, sectionals, and private lessons. Students play side by side with college students, music instructors, professional musicians and community members.
All programs are year-round. The JUMP program hosts an 8-week, half-day summer camp. Similarly, the LCO hosts an 8-week, all-day Summer Intensive, an accelerated program teaching first year music theory and more for advanced students.
Inspired by the El Sistema educational model, an international movement sparked in Venezuela in 1975, we believe all children have a right to access high quality music education, regardless of socio-economic status, race, or gender. Because of this belief, we have, and will always, offer these programs free of charge.
