Laughing Bear Bakery

A nonprofit organization

Our employees are paid above minimum wage. The work skills they learn prepare them to work in a commercial kitchen, to follow instructions, to take initiative, to use critical thinking skills, to get along with others in a work environment, and to meet standards of work and behavior at any job. The high-quality, "from-scratch" bakery goods are sold at farmers' markets and street fairs in the St. Louis area, by order for local delivery, and at specialty shops, grocery stores, a microbrewery, and on the campus of Washington University. Our employees have gone on to manage restaurants, work in offices, return to college, and become contributing members of our community. Since we opened our doors in November 2015, we've enjoyed almost a 100% success rate at helping to keep our employees from returning to prison.

Mission

Laughing Bear Bakery is a work skills reintegration program. We offer ex-offenders paid employment upon their release from prison, the most effective means to combat recidivism. Laughing Bear Bakery facilitates the obligations that make it difficult for ex-offenders to keep a job and prepares them to be better employees and better citizens with a better chance for a better future. Assisting ex-offenders with meaningful employment addresses a major public safety issue.
