HOME WORKS

A nonprofit organization

We want YOU to join us on our mission to build literacy, math skills, and attendance for the kids learning in under-resourced schools!

Our students need your support to catch up.

We’ve all seen the reports by now — the pandemic erased an alarming two decades' worth of educational progress in reading and math and further widened the opportunity gap between students from wealthy and poor communities to an alarming degree. St. Louis was among the top four hardest hit communities in the nation, showing the highest rate of students below grade level in math and reading due to the pandemic . . . In the face of these significant setbacks, education experts consistently call for more instructional time, beyond the school day, to accelerate learning for the students who are behind. And here at HOME WORKS!, we have a sustainable, cost effective, and evidenced-based solution to do just that . . .

We know that a parent’s limitless love and desire for their child to succeed can power lifelong success in school and in life.

Decades of research continue to show that involving families in their children’s education is critical to student success! In fact, the extent at which parents are involved in their children’s learning is a more powerful predictor of academic success than any other variable – even beyond socioeconomic status! That is why our program supports teachers to Unlock the Power of Home, tapping into a parent's natural skill set to be a powerful learning advocate for their child. And parents are also hungry for this kind of partnership! Yet, too often under-resourced schools do not have the capacity, infrastructure, or financial resources to make this happen on their own . . . that is where HOME WORKS! comes in to build the bridge between school and home . . .

When parents and teachers work together, they create a cohesive support system that fosters growth and reinforces learning both at home and in school.

HOME WORKS! provides intensive professional development, coaching, training, and resources for teachers to build trusting relationships that bring the power of their teaching into their students’ homes. Through connection-strengthening School and Family Dinners, academic-focused Teacher Home Visits, and skill-building Parent-Teacher Workshops, teachers and parents form a powerful bonds aligned around the shared goal of seeing students thrive. By activating parents as co-educators who extend instructional time outside of the classroom, we see significant improvements in literacy, math, and attendance for the students who receive our program!

“At the HOME WORKS! Parent-Teacher Workshop, I sent home reading journal prompts to a family who attended. The father texted me the next day about how the focused questions are helping him talk about reading more with his kids. With continued resources being sent home and the family's consistent attendance at HOME WORKS! events, this student demonstrated astronomical growth in reading and in math. During the 2022-23 school year, the student's reading grade level grew by 15 months! In math, her grade level grew by an astonishing 20 months, putting her math abilities above the average third grade level.”  — Ms. Amsler, St. Louis Public Schools Teacher

Students succeed in school when teachers provide skills and strategies that enhance a parent’s natural ability to be a powerful learning advocate while also setting goals to monitor their child’s progress. And our methods are making a BIG impact . . .

Together, let’s close the opportunity gap for students learning in under-resourced schools! What we invest into our children’s education today will benefit our community tenfold as they grow into adulthood, setting them up for success in the workplace, life, and at home — Join us today in Unlocking the Power of Home!
