Field House Museum

A nonprofit organization

The Field House Museum is a dynamic museum and historic site focused on the Field family. The historic house was once the home of Roswell Field, noted St. Louis attorney, and the birthplace of his son, Eugene Field, the "Poet of Childhood." While living in the home, Roswell Field became the key attorney in the Dred & Harriet Scott Freedom Suit when he formulated the legal strategy that propelled the case to the Supreme Court. The house is designated as a National Historic Landmark and has an attached museum featuring the many collections of the Field House Museum along with traveling exhibits.

Since opening the museum expansion, the Board & staff has worked diligently to create various programs at the Museum and within the community. While the Speaker Series & Author Talks focus mainly on St. Louis history, we have recently expanded to include speakers worldwide, with guests from Canada and Europe joining in. This year's new program will be our Cocktails & Conversations series, where guests can enjoy a cocktail while conversing with a curator about a current exhibit or museum topic.

To help reach a broader audience, the Museum offers Free Third Thursdays, where admission to the Museum's expansion is free and discounted for a historic house tour. The Museum is also part of the Blue Star Museums program, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, in collaboration with the Department of Defense and museums across America, offering free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve.

Other Museum initiatives include specialized tours for groups of all ages, educational programming, and unique activities, such as our "Crouquet in the Lou" croquet tournament.

Although the Field House Museum is a 501(c)(3) organization run by the Eugene Field House Foundation, we do NOT receive any funds through the ZMD (Zoo Museum District) or the City of St. Louis, the state of Missouri, or the Federal Government.

• Promote the works of Roswell Martin Field, a champion of human freedom & equality, as exemplified by his role as the key attorney for Dred Scott;

• Accurately portray American domestic life within 1850s St. Louis;

• Facilitate the study of the culture of childhood through period artifacts.
