As many of you know, I am deeply grateful to be part of the community of educators in St. Louis. For the past 3 years, I've had the privilege to teach English language learners in our city. There is so much I love about teaching: building relationships with students and families, getting creative and collaboratively problem-solving with my colleagues, and the joy of witnessing my students grow.
I am more certain than ever—especially as I prepare to graduate from SLU with my Master's in Teaching—that I'm called to be a teacher. I'm also certain, however, that our current systems are broken, and teachers are struggling.
I've seen it firsthand, the realities reflected in classrooms across the country: teachers staying late and arriving early to try to stay on top of it all, navigating panic attacks at school, wanting to do more for their students when they barely have enough time to go to the bathroom or eat lunch. On the 2025 State of the American Teacher Survey, 46% of all teachers said their job makes them too tired for life outside of school (families, friends, exercising, hobbies), compared to just 13% of similar working adults. This is why I'm so proud to be fundraising for and partnering with Hearing the Helper STL.
Hearing the Helper is so profoundly up my alley, as our work is grounded in listening, storytelling, and accompaniment to ensure helping professionals feel seen and to better understand the burnout and attrition crisis within our community. We're also seeking to learn from the “bright spots”: those times when schools, hospitals, and organizations do it differently and better, and we're collaborating with local artists to tell these stories publicly, to spark conversation and inspire redesign of our helping fields.
Because I love this work and want to do it for a long, long time, I refuse to walk away from it, even as we face this burnout crisis. Join me in supporting Hearing the Helper!
